WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT POSITIONS IN THE SEMICONDUCTOR INDUSTRY?
An operator requires a high school degree, works in the cleanroom on a daily basis, operates non-automated equipment, inspects wafers, performs minor equipment maintenance.
A technician position requires an L1 certificate or a 2 year community college degree, works in the cleanroom or subfab on a daily basis, maintains the equipment, troubleshoots issues with the equipment or process.
An engineer position requires a minimum of a 4 year engineering degree or graduate degree, works in an office setting and spends time in the cleanroom as needed, works on defining specifications for specific parts of the chip manufacturing process: design, process, process flow, equipment.
HOW CAN YOU PAY FOR YOUR EDUCATION?
Many semiconductor companies offer tuition reimbursement for their employees after being employed for a specific time period. You can start as an operator, train to be a technician, and even earn your engineering degree paid for by your employer.
